Reflections on the mysteries of teaching and learning, the complexities of libraries, and the joys of teaching leadership online.
I currently serve as the Director of Teaching and Learning at Medicine Hat College in Alberta, and teach leadership and management principles in the University of Alberta’s online Graduate School of Library and Information Science. In 2018, Assessment Strategies for Online Learning: Engagement and Authenticity, was published by Athabasca University Press. I am presently pursuing my Doctorate of Education in Distance Education through Athabasca University, and while enrolled at Athabasca University, I received the Graduate Citizenship Award in 2016 for my work supporting non-profit agencies in SE Alberta. I have led award-winning library technology projects and have delivered keynote presentations for Community Futures, the Family and Child Support Services Agencies of Alberta. I believe strengths-based approaches can meet the basic psychological needs of employees AND give organizations a better chance at meeting their strategic change initiatives.

Inspiration
Throughout my life, I've come to more questions than conclusions. But I agree with this:
"I have always held that, if he who bases his hopes on human nature is a fool, he who gives up in the face of circumstances is a coward. And henceforth, the only honorable course will be to stake everything on a formidable gamble: that words are more powerful than munitions." - Albert Camus, Neither Victims Nor Executioners
This quote from Camus reflects moral commitment and a deep faith, defined by Theo Hobson as a "special form of imagination" where we "assume a positive attitude by imagining a good future," take a "positive attitude out of courage" and live with the conviction that "life's decisions must not be made out of fear." Faith is "a positive, hopeful attitude that is willing to dissent from convention, common sense, reasonability. It is a form of hope that sticks its neck out." (Hobson, 2014).
